Value of a Good Clean Joke

A good clean joke is true humor in a way that many other jokes are not. What is humor? It is something funny in its own right. Often, it points out something about society at large, or about human nature, that many can relate to and poke fun at in a loving manner. Other times, humor is sincerely silly if not completely ridiculous. Blending the ridiculous with the regular is often considered humorous. Above all, true humor is just plain fun.

A clean joke meets many or all of the criteria listed above, especially the final criteria. A good joke is fun. It is fun to tell, fun to hear, and fun to share with others. Some "dirty" jokes or other non-clean jokes are only fun for some. The fact that such jokes can be found offensive drastically detracts from their quality as true humor. Too often, they rely on insult or harmful stereotype to get their point across. When a joke runs the risk of hurting someone's feelings or angering them, it is no longer funny.

But a clean joke does not do this. A joke uses a clever pun or a silly situation to make a positive point that all can relate to. In fact, a pun is often considered the only kind of joke that does not insult someone to earn its laughter. These reasons make a clean joke very easy to relate to. It does no harm, and only brings positively and laughter to those who experience it. This is the essence of a good joke.
